Table and Dining Etiquette 101

Having the proper etiquette when dining, especially on important occasions or business meetings is very important in putting your best foot forward as well as leaving a good lasting impression! Here are some tips you can keep in your back pocket if you ever find yourself in a fine dining setting or in a meal with some business associates.

  1. If you are sitting at a table and waiting for someone to arrive, once they arrive you must stand to greet them. Offer your hand for a handshake or if you have a closer relationship you may hug and such. Additionally, if you have been waiting a while, you may order a beverage but try to refrain from ordering any food until they’ve arrived.

  2. This probably goes without saying but chew with your mouth closed. Always finish what you are chewing before talking as well.

  3. In a world of electronics, sometimes it’s difficult to be away from your phone. However, when it comes to a meal you should keep your phone away and leave it on vibrate or silent. If it's a more informal dining set such as lunch with friends or family you may keep your phone on the table but face down and again keep it on vibrate or silent mode to avoid any distractions from the conversation.

  4. Do not attend to hygiene or touch up your makeup at the table. Especially for women, if you feel the need to retouch your lipstick then excuse yourself from the table and fix your makeup in the restroom.

  5. Make use of the napkin, however, do not use it to blow your nose. The napkin is there to protect your lap from food that may drop or spill and to wipe the sides of your mouth. If you need to blow your nose or something similar then use a tissue. In addition, if you are leaving the table for a short period of time, leave the napkin on your chair. When the meal has ended, neatly fold your napkin and leave it towards the left side of your plate.
