DH: Arthur, Let’s begin with your background. Could you please tell us a little about yourself? How did you start in the hospitality industry?
AG: Yeah, so I'm of a Filipino heritage. My father was a diplomat, so I grew up all over until we settled in Canada. So I stayed in Toronto in the 70’s and I went to hotel school and then worked there for a number of years before I was offered a job to come back here to Asia. My first job was with the Shangri-la group in China in 1989 when few people went to China during those years. I arrived three months after Tiananmen (Tiananmen Square Massacre).
DH: That must have been a tough start.
AG: Yeah. That was an experience. Later I had a job offer to come to the Philippines to work as a food and beverage director. So the Philippines is my heritage, but as I mentioned before, I had never really lived here, so when I returned to the Philippines it was like my first time. When I arrived it was Christmas Eve of 1990 and my first Christmas working in my country of heritage. Fast forward, I've now been in the region for 32 years after arriving out of Toronto and China. Having said that, my family is predominantly still back in Toronto.
