Cocktail Curiosities: Snowball

Christmas is the perfect time to try out a snowball cocktail. It’s often served during the holiday season to help you get all warmed up and in the Christmas spirit. It is said that the original snowball recipe was made around the 1940’s in Britain. It used to contain brandy and didn’t become popular until a few decades later.

Today, a traditional snowball is made with advocaat and carbonated lemonade. Many might be wondering what advocaat is since we don’t see recipes often that ask for this liqueur. Unlike the snowball cocktail recipe, advocaat has been around since around the 17th century. It comes from the Netherlands and is made with a combination of the following ingredients: egg yolks, sugar, brandy, honey, vanilla, lemonade, cream, or condensed milk. It is similar to eggnog in that it is also a creamy alcoholic beverage enjoyed during the holiday season.
