In this article let us quickly dig into the damp earth and explore what truffles are all about!
What are truffles?
Love it or hate it, simply put, truffles are a kind of mushroom.
Why are they expensive?
Truffles are expensive because they are difficult to grow and find. There are only a few places and countries in the world that grow them which means they are rare. Another factor to take into consideration is that they are seasonal which means they are not always readily available and they also have a short shelf life.
How do they grow and where can you find them?
Truffles naturally grow underground. You can usually find them growing by the roots of trees such as: pine, birch, oak, and hazelnut. To find truffles, some farmers and hunters use dogs or pigs to locate this special mushroom with a very distinct scent. Once it is located it is dug up from the ground. Truffles grow best in damp soil so it’s best to look for them a couple weeks after it has been raining.
