Davao Hotel Diaries: Microtel By Wyndham

My travels this year have brought me to many different places which means staying at various hotels. As life goes, some hotels are better than others. One small hotel which surprised me recently was the Microtel By Wyndham in Davao. A small hotel with great impact and a warm and welcoming staff.

My colleague and I arrived one rainy evening and were greeted with the nicest staff members of this hotel. From the guard at the entrance to the ladies at the front desk, as well as the men who helped us with our bags, everyone was very respectful and pleasant to talk to. They were all accommodating and very welcoming. They were ready to serve and clearly took their jobs seriously and always put their best foot forward.

The first thing I noticed when walking into the lobby was that it was clean and modern looking. My favorite section is where they built this bar area by the front window which makes a nice sunny spot to do some work during the day. You could easily and comfortably set up your laptop or tablet on the desk and concentrate on some deadlines and such. There are even multiple plugs underneath the desk so you can charge your devices without a problem.

When entering our room, I noticed that the two beds were bigger than usual. You could easily fit a family or group of friends in the room and everyone would still sleep comfortably since the bed could definitely fit more than two people. The room was clean and the bathroom was a decent size. Although it could have done with some additional light fixtures and a better water heater, in the grand scheme of things, it wasn’t a deal breaker. I would not hesitate to book my future stays in this hotel.

When it came to breakfast, the setup was small but delicious. They have a little breakfast area on the ground floor which is clean and well organized. We went an hour before breakfast was closing up and they still refilled the dishes constantly although there weren’t that many people eating that morning. They had a toaster where you could heat up your bread which is pretty standard for all hotel breakfast set ups. Of course they had the number one Filipino staple which is rice, but they also had a few choices to go with the fried rice. Although the choices are limited compared to other breakfast buffets, the quality of the food was great and everything was tasty. They also had a couple choices when it came to juices, as well as coffee and tea. Overall, even though it was small, it was done well.

Water dispenser in hallway

One thing that stood out to me when walking through the halls is that they have water dispensers in every corridor. I found this very interesting since I haven’t seen a hotel do this before. It’s a very smart move providing drinking water on all floors. Instead of providing plastic bottles and creating plastic waste, this encourages people to use their own water bottles. It's also nice to be able to get water not just within the hotel but pretty much right outside your door instead of walking to a convenience store, or calling the front desk to ask if you can buy some water.

When it comes to location, it’s close to many food establishments and a mall. You could easily order food or whatever you want via a food delivery app of your choice. If you prefer to leave the premises to eat, you don’t have to walk very far. Along the same block the hotel is in, there are some choices, and even more choices when you walk across the road.

To sum things up, although there were small things that could be improved, none of those things would deter me from booking a room again. I would even go as far as recommending it to some friends and family. The Microtel by Wyndham in Davao really is convenient and they do not cut corners when it comes to customer care and hospitality. Overall it was a very restful and enjoyable stay.
