Classic Cocktails: Long Island Iced Tea

Juan Nita

When you search up how this drink was made you’ll find that there seem to be two origin stories. One with Robert “Rosebud” Butt who invented the drink for a contest in 1972, and another claim that says this cocktail was made by “Old Man Bishop” in the 1920s during the Prohibition in the United States. Whoever made this drink, we know that the Long Island iced tea is one of those drinks that packs a punch. It may resemble iced tea but it is definitely not made the same. This famous drink is usually made with five different spirits which is why it has the reputation of being a strong cocktail.

Long Island Ice Tea
Ingredients:
  • ½ ounce vodka

  • ½ ounce tequila

  • -½ ounce gin

  • ½ ounce rum

  • ½ triple sec

  • 1 ounce of cola

  • 1 ounce of lemon juice

  • Lemon slice

  • Ice

Directions:
  1. Add the vodka, gin, tequila, rum, triple sec, and lemon juice into a cocktail shaker.

  2. Fill it halfway with ice and shake.

  3. Strain the liquid into a cocktail glass with ice.

  4. Add cola to fill the glass to the top.

  5. Garnish it with a lemon slice.

Notes:
  • If you are not a fan of cola you can swap it for ginger ale.

  • You may switch out lemon for lime if that is what you prefer.

  • If you want to sweeten the drink you can add simple syrup to taste.

  • If the drink is too strong just add more cola to balance it out.

  • For a twist on this classic recipe, you may use flavored vodka or swap the tequila for bourbon.
