There are many places to grab a pastry and a cup of coffee around the metro. However, recently, I have found a new favorite for croissants and other golden brown buttery sweet and savory treats. Butterboy Bakehouse currently has three branches in the metro. One in Quezon city, another in the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay city, and one more at SM North Edsa. This month, let’s take a closer look at what they have to offer.
First, a quick back story on how it all began. Well, on their website you’ll be able to read their short and sweet story of a doctor and architect who just love to cook and eat good food. A moment of experimentation with pastries has now turned into a delicious business!
The first thing I will say is that I have tried more than just their croissants and to my surprise, I haven’t tried a pastry that I didn’t enjoy. Whether it was sweet or savory, all of them have been pleasant so far. First, let us start with the classic croissants. In terms of price, these are by far the best value for money. A butter croissant is only PHP60 which means you can easily get half a dozen or even a dozen for a very decent price. If you are heading to a friend’s place or want to bring someone a treat, this is a great quick option to brighten someone’s day. Another alternative is the Kouign Amann which is also decently priced and has a hint of sweetness with the salted caramel sugar.
Other savory options are the Spinach Cheese Quiche and Ham and Cheese Croissant which make good breakfast options. There are also some interesting options that you may have not seen before from other bakeries and it is the Cubano Pork Roll, Caldereta Croissant, and Truffle Fondue Basket. I still have my eye on the former two as I have not tried them yet, however, I have tried the Truffle Fondue Basket and it was delicious. It has a cheese fondue filling and comes with a little pipette of truffle oil. Since I was having it at home, I heated it for a few seconds in the microwave before eating and it was warm, cheesy, and very much rich with truffle flavor. They also have a Spinach and Garlic Cheese Croissant Pizza which is made with Croissant dough for the pizza base and fondue cheese sauce.
Now, let’s move on to the sweeter side of things. When it comes to fruity and chocolatey pastries there is much to choose from. They have Strawberry Cheesecake Croissants, White Chocolate Matcha Croissants, and Paris-Brest Croissants which if you are unfamiliar with it contains hazelnut praline cream as well as almonds. They also have a few chocolate options for the chocolate-obsessed out there. From a regular Pain Au Chocolat to a Double Chocolate Pain Au Chocolat, and if that’s not enough, they also have a Chocolate Kouign Amann and a Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant. They also have a couple of fruity options such as an Apple Danish and Strawberry Danish which both contain a smooth cream filling topped with fruit that just hits the spot every time which is why you will find both of these in their list of bestsellers.
Of course, when you get a pastry you also have to grab a coffee or beverage. They have a wonderful selection to choose from. Just like their pastries, they have classic coffees such as Americano, Latte, and Mocha which can be hot or iced, but they also have some unique drinks too. If you are feeling adventurous, you may want to try out their Strawberry Iced Latte, Hot Cereal Latte, or even a Buko Juice Matcha.
I’ve only been to their branch in Mall of Asia so far and I hope that they can expand their space one day. They do have a few chairs and tables available but it’s not surprising that it always seems to be full of people enjoying a drink and a croissant. With the quality of pastries and the affordable prices compared to other cafes and bakeries, I have a great feeling that Butterboy Bakehouse will be on a steady rise. I’d love to see them open more branches in the future, hopefully, a few closer to the south.
If you are ever in the area near a Butterboy Bakehouse branch, I highly suggest you try it out and take a box of assorted pastries to take home with you. For a good price, you’ll be able to sample both savory and sweet options as well as a good cup of coffee. If you are unable to get to a branch of theirs, you can also opt to order online and have it delivered to your home. They deliver to all over Metro Manila, as well as farther areas such as Laguna, Bulacan, Cavite, and Rozal. Check out the details on their website and make sure you don’t miss out on these pastry creations!
