Baking Basics: Tools & Equipment Part 1

Measuring cups - Measuring cups are used for not only measuring liquids like oil and milk but also powders such as sugar and flour. The measuring cup for liquid usually looks like a large cup that has a handle and a spout. It has the measurements on the side so you know when to stop pouring. For dry ingredients, the measuring cups are usually in a set that range from small to large or around ⅛ cup to 1 cup. This makes it easier to scoop up powder or other grain-like ingredients since you use it similar to a spoon.

Measuring spoons - These can be made from metal or plastic and also come in a set. It will have measurements from ¼ teaspoon up to 1 tablespoon. Using measuring spoons is important because it allows you to get the correct amount of the ingredient. We cannot rely on the regular spoon we use to eat cereal with or the teaspoon that we use to stir our coffee since those are not made to measure or are standardized when it comes to baking and cooking.

Electric Mixer

Baking pans - There are all sorts of baking pans available to use when it comes to baking. They come in a variety of sizes and shapes and all serve a different purpose. Some basic baking pans are a sheet pan used for baking cookies, muffin pan for muffins and cupcakes, a loaf pan for making bread, round pans for cakes and pies, and a springform pan which has a removable outer edge used for baking cheesecakes and the like.

Electric Mixer - An electric mixer can be a handheld device or one that takes up space on your kitchen counter. The first is great if you are on a budget or just need it for quick tasks. The second more heavy duty kind of mixer can come with a high price tag but will definitely be useful if you bake and cook often. It usually comes with other attachments aside from a whisk. Some mixers come with a dough hook which does the kneading for you when you are making dough or bread, and a flat beater for combining dry and wet ingredients together for when you make batter, frosting, or even cookie dough.
