When going on a trip you always want to look and feel your best, after all you’ll be boarding a plane to take you away somewhere nice (we hope!). Whether your trip is long or short, with or without connecting flights, you always want to aim for comfort. However, just because it's comfortable doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice some sense of style. There are plenty of ways to look great and still look great even after a 16 hour flight. Here are some tips and ideas to help you decide what to put on when heading out for your next trip.
First we must take into account the actual destination. Are you going somewhere cold or somewhere warm? Always dress appropriately for the weather. You don’t want those odd looks coming your way when you’re walking down the aisle of the plane while trying to find your seat. Imagine wearing many layers when you’re heading to a tropical island. A bit odd isn’t it? That’s not to say you can’t bring an extra layer because airplanes can be cold especially if it’s a long flight.
There are many routes you can go down in the fashion and styling world when it comes to airport fashion. For example, there is the beloved style of athleisure. Workout clothes meets comfort meets fashionable. This is probably the most loved airport style since it’s light and easy. You can throw on a matching yoga pants and tank top set and put on some sneakers and be done for the day. If you need an extra layer you can add on a matching jacket which most athleisure brands offer. Even if you can’t afford a whole matching set, whatever you have will probably already look good. You can’t really go wrong with some plain black yoga pants and a basic t-shirt. If you want to be extra comfy and want something with more warmth to it, you could always put on some joggers or sweats. Yes, we know the word “sweats” does not sound appealing at all, but have you seen all the “sweat sets” available? They come in all the colors you could ever want with many different choices for a top. There’s a shirt, a crop top, a tank top, a sweater, a hoodie, and all the variations in between.
If you are the type of person who won’t be caught outside the gym or your home in athleisure then there are other options too. You could wear jeans if you really wanted to… But jeans are notorious for being uncomfortable because not all denim is made equally. If you want to wear jeans then make sure to find one that has some stretch to it. You don’t want to be in a tight and inflexible pair of jeans when your flight gets delayed for a few hours, which does happen sometimes! Anyone who has flown a few times knows that sometimes things just happen and there’s nothing we can do about it. Sometimes flights get delayed from aircraft problems, or weather, and a whole list of other things. That’s why comfort is always key since you have to be prepared for anything.
Another thing to think about is wearing white. Although a white outfit or a classic white top never flops, it is however in this case slightly impractical. Think about it, you are heading to a place where there are tons of people, you sit on chairs that thousands of other people have sat on and you are lifting and carrying bags and so on. There’s a lot of movement happening, and don’t forget the ever dreadful case of turbulence. Turbulence always seems to happen just right after they’ve served the food and you’re about to start your movie. You do not want to be wearing white when you’re trying to keep your food from sliding and bouncing around in front of you.
When it comes to shoes, keep it practical as well. Sneakers are probably your best option, especially the kind that don’t have laces. You do not want the hassle of undoing and then doing up your high top sneakers or combat boots. Try to pick something that you can easily slip on and off since you know there is bound to be a security check at some point between checking in and boarding the plane. You don’t want to be that person that holds up the line because you chose to wear some time consuming footwear. Also, don’t forget all the walking you have to do during your time at the airport. Unless you are a Hollywood A-list celebrity who will be photographed at all times of the day, stay away from heels and sandals! You do not need to be wearing stilettos or any sandal that will just slow you down when you need to catch a flight. You can’t predict if they will switch your gate to the farthest one on the other side of the airport (which can happen!) so, again, it’s best to be prepared for any changes that might transpire.
Lastly, let’s talk about jewelry and accessories. You can wear jewelry but it’s best to wait until you’ve cleared security before putting it on. Although a stack of bracelets can complete an outfit, it will be a hassle for you when it comes to the security check and they ask you to take it all off. If you do want to wear jewelry, keep it minimal, like a watch or belt which is easy enough to take on and off if they ask you to. Keep the more dainty things like necklaces and earrings for when you’re on the other side of things.
Wherever you may be going, whether it’s for business or pleasure, warm or cold weather, a long flight or a short one, look cool but most importantly stay comfortable!
